How to Use Your Self Hypnosis Sessions

← Back to Getting Started with Self Hypnosis

Self hypnosis is designed to be simple. You don’t need to control the process or get it “right” for it to work. Each session is carefully structured to guide you into a relaxed and focused state.

This guide will show you how to use your sessions in a simple and effective way, including when to listen, how often to use them, and how to build a routine that fits naturally into your day.

If you’re new to hypnosis, What to Expect from a Self Hypnosis Session explains how a typical session unfolds.

Where and When to Listen

Choosing the right time and place can help you relax more easily and get the most from each session.

When to listen

There is no single best time to listen. Many people prefer the evening, especially before sleep, but morning or daytime sessions can work just as well. The most important thing is choosing a time that fits naturally into your day.

If possible, try to listen at roughly the same time each day. This can make it easier to relax as your mind becomes more familiar with the process.

Where to listen

Choose a quiet, comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed.

This might be:

  • A bed
  • A sofa
  • A comfortable chair

If you tend to fall asleep in bed, you may prefer to listen somewhere else, although drifting off occasionally is not a problem.

Before you begin:

  • Silence your phone or notifications
  • Reduce background noise as best you can
  • Let others know you’d prefer not to be interrupted

This will help you settle more easily into the session.

How to Listen

Get into a position that allows you to relax fully. There is no “correct” position, but aim for something comfortable and still. Lying down or sitting in a supportive chair both work well.

Headphones are recommended because they:

  • Improve sound quality
  • Help block out distractions
  • Make it easier to stay focused

However, listening through speakers is also fine if you prefer, as long as you’re in a quiet environment where you won’t be disturbed.

A quick safety note

Only listen when you can relax safely.

Do not use self hypnosis while driving, operating machinery, or doing anything that requires your full attention.

During a Session

The most important thing you can do is simple:

Allow yourself to relax and follow the session.

You don’t need to try to make anything happen. Hypnosis is a natural state, similar to the feeling of drifting off to sleep. Like sleep, it works best when you don’t force it.

As you listen, you may notice:

  • Your body relaxing
  • Your mind becoming quieter
  • Your attention turning inward
  • A sense of calm or stillness

Sometimes hypnosis feels deeper and more absorbing. Other times it may feel lighter or more subtle. Both are completely normal.

Many sessions are designed to be repeated, and the effect builds over time. Even when the experience feels subtle, the suggestions are still being processed and reinforced.

Experiences can vary considerably from person to person. Learn more in What Does Hypnosis Feel Like?

How Often Should You Listen?

How often you listen depends on the type of session and what you are working on. Some sessions benefit from regular repetition, while others can be used more flexibly.

For many sessions, a good approach is:

  • Once a day for the first week
  • Then every other day for two weeks

This gives the suggestions time to build and settle.

When regular listening is most helpful

More consistent listening is useful for:

  • Habit change
  • Behavioural patterns
  • More ingrained issues

In these cases, repetition helps reinforce the effect over time.

When a lighter approach is fine

Some sessions don’t need to be used every day. For example:

  • Relaxation / calming sessions
  • Occasional support sessions
  • General wellbeing / balance

These can be used:

  • Once or twice
  • A few times per week
  • Or whenever you feel the need

It’s also fine to use sessions as a secondary focus alongside your main ones, helping to support the overall process.

If you’re following a course

If your session is part of a course, simply follow the recommended structure. Each session is designed to be used on a specific day, so there’s no need to adjust the frequency.

Avoid overuse

Listening more often to the same session doesn’t make the process work faster. There is no benefit to listening back-to-back or on continuous repeat, and doing so can be counterproductive. Listening to a session once a day is enough.

If you feel the need to listen more often, you can occasionally listen twice in a day, but it’s best to leave some time between sessions.

What matters most

Consistency matters more than frequency. You don’t need to listen multiple times per day, and trying to do more than recommended won’t speed up the process. Missing a day occasionally is not a problem. What matters is maintaining a simple, steady approach over time.

Using More Than One Session

It’s perfectly fine to use more than one session over the same time period.

For example, you might combine sessions around:

  • Confidence Issues
  • Anxiety and Stress
  • Motivation and Focus

When sessions complement each other, they don’t need to be used in isolation.

A simple way to approach this

You can keep things flexible and easy to manage, for example:

  • Rotate sessions across different days
  • Use different sessions at different times (e.g. one during the day, one in the evening)
  • Focus on one session while occasionally including another

When to keep things focused

If you are working on something more specific or ingrained (such as a strong habit), it can help to focus more consistently on one session for a period of time.

This isn’t a strict rule. The main aim is to keep your approach simple, consistent, and manageable.

Sessions with multiple tracks

Most sessions contain a single track, but some include two or more. If your session has multiple tracks, you can listen to them on alternate days or follow any specific instructions provided.

Used regularly and in a way that fits your routine, your sessions can become a simple and effective part of your day.
